June 16, 2017 — Graco Children’s Products Inc. is voluntarily recalling over 25,000 “My Ride 65” car seats sold in the summer of 2014 after the harness webbing broke in two crash-tests.
The routine crash-tests were conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The first failed test was in January 2015 and the other failed crash-test was in April 2017.
Two batches of sewn webbing used in the Graco car seats had a breaking-strength of less than 11,000N, failing federal safety limits.
The harness may fail to restrain a child and increase their risk of injury or death in a serious car accident. Graco estimates that 10% of the recalled car seats are defective. According to the recall:
During a test of the individual harness restrain component, the webbing on certain My Ride 65 convertible car seats did not meet federal requirements for breaking strength.”
The NHTSA told Graco about the first failed crash-test in January 2016, but the recall was not issued until a few weeks after the second failed crash-test in April 2017. No injuries are linked to the problem.
The recalled My Ride 65 car seats were sold from May to August 2014 in the U.S. and Canada, with model numbers 1871689, 1908152, 1813074, 1872691, 1853478, 1877535, 1813015, and 1794334.
Consumers should stop using the recalled car seats and contact Graco for a free replacement harness webbing kit. For more information, call Graco Customer Service at 1-800-345-4109.
