Farxiga and Ketoacidosis

Ketoacidosis is a life-threatening disorder that occurs when the blood becomes very acidic. It occurs as a complication of diabetes when there is not enough insulin to use glucose in the bloodstream as a source of energy. When the body starts burning fat, toxic fatty acids called ketones build up and cause side effects.

Health officials warn that Farxiga patients who develop ketoacidosis should immediately seek medical attention for symptoms like breathing trouble, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, or unusual fatigue.

The reported cases of ketoacidosis are particularly concerning because many patients had normal or only mildly elevated blood-sugar levels. In some cases, symptoms were also mild. Because ketoacidosis is mostly associated with type-1 diabetes rather than type-2, there is a risk that patients will delay seeking treatment until they develop a life-threatening complication.

Complications of Ketoacidosis

  • Cerebral edema (swelling in the brain)
  • Heart attack
  • Bowel tissue damage due to low blood pressure
  • Loss of consciousness or coma
  • Death

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, at this time our attorneys are not filing a Farxiga class action. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits and reviewing cases involving very serious injuries, such as:

About Class Actions

Class actions can have advantages in some circumstances — especially when a lot of people have similar legal claims but the cost of filing an individual lawsuit outweighs the potential benefit. You may have already been part of a class action or received reimbursement for a product that was defective or falsely advertised.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Class actions have disadvantages when defective medications cause serious injuries. Victims are often physically injured and financially devastated by medical bills, lost income, and disability. Unfortunately, members of class actions may have to accept high attorneys’ fees or a “low-ball” settlement, and watch the payout divided among thousands of people.

Instead of a class action, our attorneys specialize in filing individual lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies that sell defective medications, fail to adequately test new drugs, and conceal dangerous side effects. There is no excuse for putting corporate profits above public safety. We are passionate about holding drug-makers accountable.
