Salmonella Food Poisoning

Every year, Salmonella is estimated to cause 1 million cases of food poisoning in the United States, with 19,000 hospitalizations and 380 deaths. Symptoms of infection include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps that begin 12-72 hours after the bacteria is ingested, and last for 4-7 days.

In rare cases, Salmonella can cause life-threatening complications. According to the FDA:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
