June 16, 2020 — A recall was issued for NOW Real Food® Raw Unsalted Macadamia Nuts after a product tested positive for Salmonella.
NOW Health Group Inc., of Bloomingdale, Illinois, recalled unsalted macadamia nuts that were sold in 8-oz pouches with Product Code #7119, Lot #3141055, and Best-By date of 01/2021.
The recall was issued after a routine sample of a finished product in a later lot was positive for Salmonella. The lot was not released. The recall involves an earlier lot that contained the same raw material.
NOW is asking consumers to bring the recalled macadamia nuts back to the place of purchase for a refund. No receipt is needed for refunds.
The company did not report any illnesses as of June 12, but food poisoning with Salmonella can be serious, particularly for people with vulnerable immune systems.
The symptoms of a Salmonella infection often include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, Salmonella bacteria spread into the bloodstream and cause severe complications, such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
