Peg Perego Stroller Recall 8 Years After Infant Death

Peg Perego Stroller Recall 8 Years After Infant Death

July 24, 2012 — Stroller manufacturer Peg Perego has announced a recall of 223,000 strollers due to the risk of strangulation and death. The recall is occurring eight years after a 6-month-old baby strangled to death in the stroller. Consumers should immediately stop using the strollers and contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit.

The recalled strollers are marked with the “Peg Perego” brand. They are also marked with the recalled brands, “Venezia” or “Pliko P3.”

The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) said that a baby from Tarzana, California strangled to death in 2004, when his head became trapped between the seat and the tray of his Peg Perego stroller. Three years later, the CPSC received a report of a 7-month-old girl from New York who nearly strangled after her head became trapped in the same way. Because the CPSC receives voluntarily-submitted reports, it is possible that other children were injured or killed due to the defect.

The CPSC warned that babies who are not restrained in the stroller can be entrapped and and strangled under the tray. The risk is especially high for infants less than 12 months old.

Improved industry standards now require a larger opening between the stroller seat and tray. This larger opening prevents infants from entrapment and strangulation hazards.

The recall involves two different version of Peg Perego strollers: Venezia and Pliko-P3. The strollers were manufactured between January 2004 and September 2007 and came in a variety of colors. The products were sold at retailers such as Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby from January 2004 until September 2010. They were sold for $270-450 and manufactured in Italy.

Although the products are an older model of the stroller, it is possible that they may still be used and sold second-hand.

Pliko strollers with a front bumper or a tray with two cup holders are not a part of the recall. Only strollers with one cup holder in the tray are part of the recall.
