Trader Joe’s Recalls Walnuts for Food Poisoning Risk

Trader Joe’s Recalls Walnuts for Food Poisoning Risk

March 17, 2015 — Raw walnuts sold nationwide by Trader Joe’s have been recalled due to the potential risk of food poisoning from Salmonella.

Trader Joe’s has not received any reports of food poisoning, and the recall is being undertaken “out of an abundance of caution.”

Contamination was discovered by a third-party contractor to the FDA during routine screening. All of the products will be removed from store shelves and Trader Joe’s will not be selling raw walnuts while they investigate the source of the contamination.

The walnuts were sold in clear plastic bags in 12oz and 16oz sizes. The following products are subject to recall:

  • Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Walnut Pieces – 16oz
  • Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Walnut Halves & Pieces – 16 oz
  • Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Walnut Baking Pieces – 16 oz
  • Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Premium Walnut Halves – 16oz
  • Trader Joe’s Organic Raw Walnut Halves & Pieces – 12oz

Walnut Salmonella Food Poisoning

The FDA warned that Salmonella infections can be very serious or even deadly. Symptoms in healthy adults typically include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, there is a risk that the bacterial infection could spread to the bloodstream and cause life-threatening complications:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
