At least 63 people in California have been infected with Salmonella after eating eggs that were recalled by Vega Farms, including 13 people who were hospitalized, according to an outbreak update posted on December 12 by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
Vega Farms Announces Egg Recall for Salmonella Risk
On December 5, 2025, Vega Farms Inc. of Dixon, California, announced a recall for in-shell eggs and Vega Farms® eggs that were sold in California to grocery stores, restaurants, co-ops, and farmers markets in Northern California (mostly the Sacramento area).
How To Identify Vega Farms Eggs
Vega Farms has recalled brown eggs with the following information:
- Product description: Brown Eggs
- Handler Code: 2136
- Julian Date (3-digit number from 001 to 365 corresponding to the day of the year): 328 and prior
- Sell-by dates: 12-22-25 and prior
- Brand name: Vega Farms
- Package sizes:
- Consumer packaging: 1-dozen cartons and 30-egg flats

What Happened?
Health officials said they found multiple types of Salmonella in eggs and environmental samples that were collected from Vega Farms, including a sample that matched the strain of Salmonella Enteritidis that has been making people sick in this outbreak..
According to the announcement:
“Multiple samples tested positive for Salmonella. Whole genome sequencing analysis revealed that the Salmonella in at least one sample matched the strain found in sick individuals.”
What Should I Do?
Consumers and retailers should not eat, serve, or sell the recalled in-shell eggs distributed by Vega Farms, Inc.
Anyone who ate these eggs should be vigilant for symptoms of Salmonella and seek medical attention if the illness becomes severe. While most healthy adults recover within a few days, in some cases Salmonella infections can become life-threatening.
The symptoms can begin 6 hours to 6 days after eating food that is contaminated. The symptoms typically include fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Children under 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to get very sick.
