May 22, 2014 — About 1.4 million Office Depot® Gibson Leather Task Chairs are being recalled because they can break and cause serious injury.
Office Depot has received 153 reports of the office chairs breaking, including 25 injury reports. One person suffered a fractured back and hip that required medical attention.
According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) recall notification, the mounting plate weld can break, which causes the seat to detach from the base of the chair. This poses a serious fall hazard for anyone sitting in the chair.
Injuries linked to the recalled office chairs:
- Bruises
- Contusions
- Scrapes
- Abrasions
- Head and neck injuries
- Fractured back
- Fractured hip
The black, armless, adjustable office chairs have a black base with five wheels. Office Depot sold the chairs in stores and on the internet for about $40 from 2003-2012. Customers should stop using the chairs and return them to Office Depot. The store will provide a $55 merchandise credit.
What Office Chairs were Recalled?
The affected chairs have the SKU number 105479 and the registration numbers PA 27248 (CN), PA 25498 (CN), PA 25276 (HK) or CA 35181 (RC) that can be found next to the words “Made in China” which is printed on a label located on the underside of the seats.
