September 7, 2018 — Empire Kosher chicken has been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella that has sickened at least 17 people in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, including 1 person in New York who died of a severe illness.
A total of 17 infections were reported in Maryland (1), New York (11), Pennsylvania (4), and Virginia (1), with 8 people hospitalized and 1 death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) outbreak investigation on August 29.
The illnesses were reported between September 25, 2017 and June 4, 2018. The CDC began investigating in June 2018 after health officials in New York determined that several ill people ate kosher chicken.
Out of 14 people who were interviewed, all (100%) reported eating chicken products. Of the 9 people who reported brand information, 7 reported specifically eating Empire Kosher brand chicken.
The outbreak strain of Salmonella was also identified in samples of raw chicken that were collected from two facilities, including one facility that processes Empire Kosher brand chicken.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning. Most people develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps between 12 and 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The illness usually lasts between 4 and 7 days. Most people recover without treatment.
