Bayer Recalls Tinactin for Toxic Benzene Cancer Risk
On October 1, 2021, Bayer issued a massive recall for Lotrimin® and Tinactin® anti-fungal spray products due to benzene, a chemical that is believed to be a human carcinogen.
What Products Were Recalled?
Bayer voluntarily recalled all unexpired Lotrimin® AF and Tinactin® anti-fungal spray products with lot numbers beginning with TN or CV, including:
- Lotrimin® Anti-Fungal (AF) Athlete’s Foot Powder Spray
- Lotrimin® Anti-Fungal Jock Itch (AFJI) Athlete’s Foot Powder Spray
- Lotrimin® Anti-Fungal (AF) Athlete’s Foot Deodorant Powder Spray
- Lotrimin® AF Athlete’s Foot Liquid Spray
- Lotrimin® AF Athlete’s Foot Daily Prevention Deodorant Powder Spray
- Tinactin® Jock Itch (JI) Powder Spray
- Tinactin® Athlete’s Foot Deodorant Powder Spray
- Tinactin® Athlete’s Foot Powder Spray
- Tinactin® Athlete’s Foot Liquid Spray
What is the Problem?
The recalls were issued due to “low levels of residual solvent benzene” in some samples of final products. Benzene is not an ingredient that is added to these products. Instead, it is likely an impurity that is left over from the manufacturing process.
What is the Risk?
Bayer said the amount of benzene in the recalled Tinactin products “would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences,” according to the recall notice. Even so, benzene is a cancer-causing chemical, and it can get into the body when a person absorbs it through the skin, breathes it, or swallows it.
“Depending on duration and level of exposure, it can result in cancers including leukemia, and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening,” according to the recall.
Spray Products Recalled for Benzene Contamination
Tinactin and Lotrimin are not the only spray products that have been recalled for benzene. Since mid-2021, several recalls have been issued for spray sunscreens that were also contaminated with benzene. These products include sunscreens from Johnson & Johnson, Neutrogena, Aveeno, CVS, Coppertone, and more.
