Walmart Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

In July 2025, a pressure cooker lawsuit was filed against Walmart by a woman who was burned when the lid exploded off her Farberware Pressure Cooker, which ejected burning-hot food, steam, and liquid. According to her lawsuit:

“The pressure cookers possess defects that make them unreasonably dangerous for their intended use by consumers because the lid can be rotated and opened while the unit remains pressurized.”

What Happened?

The plaintiff, Tomica D., is a resident of Park Forest, Illinois, who accuses Walmart of selling a defective and dangerous product.

She was burned in August 2023, when the lid suddenly exploded off the pot of her Farberware 7-in-1 Pressure Cooker, which she purchased from Walmart. She blames her injuries on faulty safety features, which failed to lock the lid until the unit was not pressurized.

Lawsuit Claims Safety Features Failed to Lock The Lid

Her lawsuit quotes several statements about the safety of the Farberware 7-in-1 Pressure Cooker, which she claims failed to function as advertised. For example, the User Manual claims:

  • The pressure cooker has a “large locking lid to prevent the cooker from opening while pressurized”
  • There are “important safeguards” that prevent the lid from unlocking until “the float valve drops down by itself”

Pressure Cooker Lawsuits

Hundreds of pressure cooker lawsuits have been filed in recent years. These lawsuits accuse manufacturers of selling defective products — and they specifically claim that many pressure cookers are “unreasonably dangerous” for their intended use.

What is the Problem?

The problem with some pressure cookers is that the lid can open when the unit is still pressurized. When this occurs, opening the lid can cause a sudden release of pressure, heat, and steam. Anyone nearby (including children) may be severely burned by the hot contents of the pressure cooker being ejected out of the pot.

Pressure Cooker Lawsuits Against Walmart

Pressure cooker lawsuits have been filed against Walmart by people who were injured by Farberware Pressure Cookers, which are products that are sub-licensed and owned by Walmart.

These lawsuits have been filed by people who have been burned while using pressure cookers. The plaintiffs are seeking damages resulting from the use of a Farberware Pressure Cooker, including:

  • Serious bodily injuries
  • Medical expenses
  • Physical pain
  • Mental anguish
  • Diminished enjoyment of life
  • Other damages

The Walmart Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed on July 2, 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Eastern Division) — Case 1:25-cv-07435.
