Burn Victims Filing Alcohol Fire Pit Lawsuits Nationwide
A growing number of people who were burned by alcohol fire pits have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers for failing to warn consumers about the dangerous risks, including fire hazards and flame-jetting. These lawsuits accuse manufacturers of failing to warn consumers about hidden dangers, fire hazards, flame-jetting, and severe burns.
Alcohol Fire Pit Lawsuit Filed by Woman Burned by Flame-Jetting
One of the first lawsuits was filed in February 2025 by Carolyn T., a woman from Canada who accuses Amazon of selling her daughter a defective Colsen Fire Pit with statements like: “The higher the percentage of alcohol, the better the alcohol will burn.”
According to her lawsuit, she and her husband attempted to relight their Colsen Fire Pit by pouring out a bottle of isopropyl alcohol. She felt a sudden “whoosh” and became “engulfed in flames” due to a fire hazard called flame-jetting.
Tragically, she was hospitalized with severe burn injuries and had to undergo multiple surgeries due to “3rd-degree burns on her hands and legs and 2nd-degree burns on her face,” among other injuries, according to her lawsuit.
Her Alcohol Fire Pit Lawsuit was filed against Amazon.com, Inc. and the fire pit manufacturer, Gusar LLC, on February 21, 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida — Case Number 1:25-cv-023120.
CPSC Safety Warning: 2 Deaths and 60 Injuries Linked to Alcohol Fire Pits
Safety officials are warning people to stop using alcohol fire pits and other types of liquid-fuel-burning tabletop fire pits after 2 deaths and 60 people suffered burn injuries due to fire hazards like flame-jetting, or flames spilling out and spreading uncontrollably.
Consumers May Be Unaware of Burn Risks
Despite a growing number of burn injuries and deaths, many of these dangerous alcohol fire pits remain on the marketplace. Unsuspecting consumers may be purchasing or using these liquid-fuel or alcohol fire pits to make “s’mores” or as novelty decor for patios, tabletops, or desktops, without realizing the safety risk.
Can I File An Alcohol Fire Pit Lawsuit?
Yes. Lawsuits have been filed by people who were burned by defective fire pits that use liquid fuel to re-ignite the flame, including isopropyl alcohol (also known as “rubbing alcohol”) or other types of highly-flammable liquid fuels.
Our law firm is investigating lawsuits for people who were burned by alcohol fire pits and other types of liquid-fuel-burning fire pits, whether or not these fire pits have been recalled.
What is the Risk?
There is a risk of severe burn injuries, smoke inhalation, property damage and deaths from dangerous alcohol fire pit accidents and similar products that burn a container of liquid fuel. The risks include:
- Burn injuries
- Permanent disfigurement and scarring
- Hospitalization
- Scarring
- Skin graft surgery and debridement
- Property damage
- Fire spreading to residential areas (house fires, apartment buildings, condos, etc.)
- Deaths
What is the Fire Hazard from Alcohol Fire Pits?
Alcohol is a highly-flammable liquid that can be used to refill tabletop fire pits. There are many products on the market currently that recommend a liquid fuel, such as “tabletop fire pits” or “portable fire pits,” which are advertised as desktop decor or for making s’mores.
These products can be extremely dangerous — especially if there is an invisible flame still burning when an unsuspecting consumer tries to refill the fuel reservoir by pouring liquid alcohol into the fire pit.
What is Flame-Jetting?
This may result in a sudden explosion — called flame-jetting, which occurs when the invisible flame from low-burning alcohol ignites the gases and fuel pouring out of a container. Flame-jetting is a shocking danger to many innocent consumers, shooting out burning-hot flames for several feet away from the area where they were pouring the fuel.
How Many People Have Been Burned?
Dozens of people have been severely burned by flame-jetting fire hazards from alcohol fire pits, including 2 people who died several days after being hospitalized with severe burn injuries when their daughter tried to relight a tabletop fire pit by pouring alcohol into it.
Why Are They Still Being Sold?
Health and safety officials have issued several safety warnings about the dangers of alcohol fire pits and other types of decorative tabletop fire pits that use liquid-fuel — and yet most of these products remain on the market without safety warnings, despite several fire pit recalls.
Some of the most recent fire pit recalls include:
Colsen Fire Pits Recalled After 19 Burn Injuries Reported
In October 2024, about 89,500 Colsen Fire Pits were recalled due to severe burn injuries and flame-jetting. There were “31 reports of flame jetting and flames escaping from the concrete container; resulting in 19 burn injuries.” According to the recall:
“Two incidents resulted in third degree burns to more than 40% of victims’ bodies, and at least six incidents have involved surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, or permanent disfigurement.”
