FLIKR FIRE Tabletop Fire Pit Kills Woman’s Parents

On Father’s Day in June 2024, a woman from New Hampshire accidentally caused deadly burn injuries to both of her parents when she lit a FLIKR Fire Pot, which is a type of decorative tabletop fire pit that was sold on Amazon.com.

What Happened?

The woman, Dee M., said she was was sitting on her porch with her 93-year-old parents while using a FLIKR FIRE Tabletop Fire Pit.

She said in a “nanosecond,” things went horribly wrong. “The flame just came off that thing like a blowtorch and engulfed both my parents.” They were rushed to area hospitals and transferred to Massachusetts General due to severe burns, but it was too late.

Her parents, married 71 years, died 3 days apart. She shared her family’s tragedy to “make people very aware that this could happen to you too. We weren’t careless. We were just enjoying Father’s Day.”

Warning: Stop Using FLIKR FIRE Tabletop Fireplaces Due to Flame Jetting

In December 2024, safety officials warned consumers to Stop Using FLIKR FIRE Tabletop Fireplaces Due To Flame Jetting and Fire Hazards after 2 deaths and multiple reports of severe burn injuries, including 3rd- and 4th-degree burns.

What is the Risk?

FLIKR FIRE Tabletop Fire Pits were linked to 2 deaths and at least 3 other incidents that resulted in “third or fourth degree burns to extensive areas of consumers’ bodies,” according to the warning.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urged consumers to immediately stop using and dispose of these dangerous products, warning:

“Using alcohol-fueled FLIKRFIRE Tabletop Fireplaces can cause uncontrollable pool fires in which flames burn across the surface of pooled or spilled alcohol, as well as flame jetting from fuel containers, resulting in serious or fatal burns.”

What Are FLIKR FIRE Tabletop Fireplaces?

FLIKRFIRE Tabletop Fireplaces are small, decorative bowls or open containers that require consumers to pour isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol into the bowl and then ignite the pooled alcohol in the bowl.

Can I Get a Refund?

No. There is no refund because FLIKR LLC, the manufacturer of FLIKR FIRE Tabletop Fireplaces, is no longer in business.

Where Were They Sold?

FLIKR FIRE Tabletop Fireplaces were sold from 2018 through 2024 online at Amazon.com, BespokePost.com, Faire.com, Shopify.com, Hirschpromo.com, Wix.com, Huckberry.com, TouchofModern.com, Macys.com, Nordstroms.com, CB2.com, and NeimanMarcus.com.

FLIKR FIRE Tabletop Fireplaces Violate Safety Standards

Products that require consumers to light a pool of liquid alcohol or other fuel on fire violates voluntary safety standard ASTM F3363-19, which is designed to prevent pool fires and flame jetting in fire pit products that burn liquids.

Alcohol Fires Burn At 1,600ºF

Isopropyl alcohol burns with flame temperatures over 1,600°F and can cause 3rd-degree burns in less than one second. Igniting pooled alcohol in the FLIKRFIRE bowl creates an uncontrollable pool fire, which can suddenly produce larger, hotter flames that can spread beyond the product. You may not be able to extinguish these fires.

What is Flame Jetting?

Flame jetting, another serious safety hazard of Tabletop Fire Pits, can occur when refilling the fire pot if any flame is present. The flames may be invisible or very hard to see. When pouring fuel into the pot, any flame can ignite alcohol as it is poured and cause an explosion.

The explosion is like a blowtorch that can shoot out a jet of flames and droplets of liquid alcohol several feet — a surprisingly far distance — which can instantly engulf the consumer or innocent bystanders.
