UPDATE: Battery Phone Cases Recalled for Burn Hazard

In October 2020, Endliss Technology recalled around 367,000 Trianium battery phone cases that were sold on Amazon after 10 people suffered burn injuries. There were 96 reports of the lithium-ion battery in the case overheating due to “thermal runaway.” The cases were sold exclusively on Amazon.com from September 2014 to July 2020.

Amazon Battery Fire Lawsuit Filed in California

In September 2020, a class action lawsuit was filed by consumers who accuse Amazon of selling lithium-ion batteries that pose a fire hazard.

The lawsuit claims that Amazon is violating California laws “by falsely advertising, marketing, and selling defective, fraudulent, and often dangerous lithium-ion 18650 battery cells and products containing them.”

Fire Hazards of Lithium-Ion 18650 Battery

Lithium-ion 18650 batteries are used in a variety of products, including laptops, flashlights, cameras, lasers, children’s toys, hoverboards, e-cigarettes, battery packs, and more.

The 18650 battery is slightly larger than a AA battery. It is also one of the most commonly problematic types of lithium-ion batteries.

The plaintiffs claim that many of these 18650 batteries are counterfeit, or salvaged and relabeled in China and sold on Amazon as “new” batteries at very low prices.

According to the complaint: “Thousands of hospital emergency room visits, hundreds of aircraft fires, dismemberments, hospitalizations, and deaths are documented from Li-ion batteries.”

The Amazon Battery Fire Lawsuit (PDF) was filed on September 1, 2020, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California (Western Division – Los Angeles) — In RE: Craig Crosby, et al. v. Amazon.com Inc.Case No. 2:20-cv-8003

What is the Problem?

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have safety features that minimize the risk of fires, explosions, and other malfunctions that could shorten the life of the battery. Unfortunately, counterfeit batteries do not have these safety features, making them an extreme danger to consumers.

CNN Investigation Links Amazon Products to Fire Hazards

In September 2020, an investigation by CNN found that Amazon continued to sell dozens of electronics that were linked to multiple complaints of fires, overheating, or other serious safety hazards.

Court Holds Amazon Responsible in Laptop Battery Fire Lawsuit

In August 2020, Amazon was hit with a massive legal blow in a battery fire lawsuit in California. An appeals court ruled that Amazon was liable for selling a laptop battery that exploded and caused 3rd-degree burns to a woman from San Diego in 2016.

She filed her lawsuit against Amazon in January 2017. Three months later, Amazon sent her an email warning that the battery “may present a fire hazard” and advised discontinuing its use.
