Hot Dogs Recalled for Listeria Risk
On September 28, 2021, Espi’s Sausage and Tocino Co. recalled approximately 2,048 pounds frozen ready-to-eat packages of Argentina MIGHTY MEATY Chicken & Pork hot dogs due to a risk of Listeria contamination.
What is the Problem?
No illnesses were linked to the recalled hot dogs. Instead, the recall was issued after a third-party lab reported that a product-contact surface tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, according to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).
What Hot Dogs Were Recalled?
The recall involves 12-ounce vacuum-packed plastic packages containing frozen, ready-to-eat chicken and pork hot dogs. The products were produced on May 19, 2021 and labeled as: Argentina® MIGHTY MEATY CHICKEN AND PORK HOTDOG JUMBO” with a sell-by date of “051922” and establishment number “EST. P-17524” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These products were shipped to a distributor in California and further distributed to retail locations.
What is the Risk?
Infections with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause a serious type of food poisoning called listeriosis. The symptoms may include a fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. During pregnancy, an infection may cause a miscarriage or stillbirth.
