November 18, 2021 — A jury in Florida awarded $13 million to an Army sergeant who suffered hearing loss while using 3M earplugs.
The jury in Tallahassee found 3M to be 100% liable for the hearing loss of Sgt. Guillermo Camarillo, making it the largest win for any of the roughly 250,000 military service members who have filed claims.
Out of 5 previous trials, the plaintiffs have won 3 trials — including a $7.1 million verdict in April for three plaintiffs, a $1.7 million verdict in June, and an $8.2 million verdict in October 2021.
3M is accused of failing to warn users that the earplugs could loosen imperceptibly and fail to protect them against the damaging effects of loud noises.
The earplugs, also known as Combat Arms Earplugs version 2 (CAEv2) earplugs, were made by Aearo Technologies LLC, a company that 3M acquired.
