Bravocado and Organic Avocado Recall
March 2019 — Henry Avocado Corporation recalled California-grown whole avocados with the “Bravocado” label and organic avocados with the “Organic California” label because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning.
The recalled avocados were distributed in Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Wisconsin.
Henry Avocado Corp. packed the recalled avocados at a facility in California. All shipments from the packing facility are being recalled. Henry Avocado did not begin packing there until late January 2019.
The recalled avocados were sold individually at grocery stores. They can be identified by the stickers on the avocado itself — either “Bravocado” or “Organic California.”
No illnesses have been reported. The recall was announced after routine government tests were positive for Listeria at the California facility where the avocados were packed.
Symptoms of Listeria Food Poisoning
Infections with Listeria monocytogenes can be serious and sometimes fatal. Symptoms may not appear for up to 70 days after the food is eaten. These symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Complications of Listeria Food Poisoning
An infection with Listeria can quickly progress to life-threatening complications such as a bloodstream infection (septicemia or bacteremia) or meningitis (brain inflammation). Women who are pregnant may have no symptoms besides a miscarriage or stillbirth.
