What Happened with the Barton Pressure Cooker?

On April 26, 2024, a Louisiana woman was cooking at home using a Barton 8 Quart Aluminum Stovetop Pressure Cooker (Model 99901-H2) that she had purchased through the Walmart app just weeks earlier. It was only the third time she had used the product.

According to the federal lawsuit filed against the manufacturer, Stark Group, LLC (d/b/a Stark USA), the pressure cooker suddenly exploded without warning approximately 30 to 40 minutes into cooking. Boiling water splashed across her face, arms, chest, stomach, and underarms.

The victim described carefully following all safety instructions before each use — inspecting the pot, lid, gasket, vent, and valve, confirming the vent pipe was clear, locking the lid, and allowing pressure to release naturally before opening. The lawsuit alleges the product failed despite proper use.

What Injuries Were Reported?

The victim was taken to Lane Regional Medical Center on the day of the explosion, where she was treated for burns and blisters to her mouth, lower face, chest, and arms.

On May 1, 2024, she began treatment at the Baton Rouge General Burn Clinic for second and third degree scald burns to her face, chest, and both upper extremities.

By June 2024, her medical team recommended six months of occupational therapy for scar management across her upper limbs, along with daily compression garments to prevent scar bands and contractures.

She continued to receive active burn treatment and had sustained permanent scarring and disfigurement at the time of filing.

Medical expenses documented in the case totaled $5,747.99 at the time of filing, with the plaintiff alleging her total medical costs are significantly greater and still ongoing.

What Defects Does the Lawsuit Allege?

The lawsuit, filed under the Louisiana Products Liability Act and removed to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana (Case No. 3:26-CV-392), alleges that the Barton 8 Quart pressure cooker was defective and unreasonably dangerous in multiple ways.

The complaint alleges the product contained a manufacturing defect that rendered it unreasonably dangerous in its construction or composition, and that the design allowed this type of sudden failure to occur during foreseeable use.

The lawsuit also alleges that Stark USA failed to provide adequate warnings about the product’s potentially dangerous characteristics and failed to include features necessary to make the product safe for its intended use.

Who Makes the Barton Pressure Cooker?

The Barton 8 Quart Aluminum Stovetop Pressure Cooker (Model 99901-H2) is designed, manufactured, and distributed by Stark Group, LLC, a California company operating under the brand names Stark USA and Stark Tools USA. The product was sold through major retail channels including the Walmart app.

Who May Be Eligible to File a Lawsuit?

You may be eligible to file a pressure cooker lawsuit if you own or owned a Barton stovetop pressure cooker by Stark USA and suffered burn injuries when the product exploded or released pressure unexpectedly.

Injuries that may support a claim include burns, scalds, scarring, disfigurement, and related medical and psychological harm.
