Bella Cucina “Zip Cooker” Recall

In February 2007, HSN (Home Shopping Network) recalled about 8,300 Bella Cucina “Zip Cooker” Low Pressure Cookers (Model #03908) because it can explode hot food and cause burn injuries.

How Many People Were Injured?

HSN issued the recall after 8 people suffered 1st-degree, 2nd-degree, or 3rd-degree burns when their Bella Cucina pressure cooker exploded. It is possible that more injuries have occurred since 2007.

Where Were They Sold?

Bella Cucina “Zip Cookers” were sold on HSN’s television network and website from February 2003 through March 2004, and at some retail outlets from March 2003 through June 2004 for about $70.

What is the Problem?

Pressure cooker explosions can cause devastating burn injuries, blindness, permanent scarring, or even worse — infection and death. Scalding steam can cause 1st- and 2nd-degree burns over large sections of skin. Boiling-hot food can stick to clothing and skin and cause severe 3rd-degree burns that require painful skin grafting.

Exploding Pressure Cooker Lawsuits

A growing number of lawsuits & class actions have been filed against the manufacturers of defective pressure cookers. In many lawsuits, the pressure cooker was advertised as having “safety features” to prevent food explosions, such as a locking lid.

Unfortunately, pressure cookers explosions frequently occur when the safety features do not work, and consumers are able to open the lid when the pot contains a dangerous amount of pressure.
