UPDATE: 10 Infant Deaths Linked to Boppy Newborn Loungers

In June 2023, safety officials reminded parents to immediately stop using Boppy Newborn Loungers because babies can suffocate to death. Eight deaths were reported when the Boppy pillows were recalled in 2021, but tragically, two more babies died shortly after the recall. Click here to read more.

What is the Problem?

Safety officials are warning parents about the deadly suffocation hazards of Boppy Newborn Loungers, as well as other types of nursing pillows and newborn lounging pads. These products are helpful, but they are not safe for sleeping babies.

The problem is that babies can roll over onto the stomach or side, and they may not be strong enough to roll back. They can get stuck with their face pressed into the fabric, which poses a suffocation hazard. Babies can also roll off and suffocate under another object, like an adult pillow, blanket, or toy.

How Do Babies Suffocate?

Babies should never sleep in a Boppy or be left unattended, even for a minute, because they can suffocate to death when they:

  • Roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing
  • Roll off the lounger onto an external surface, such as an adult pillow or soft bedding that obstructs breathing.

3.3 Million Boppy Newborn Loungers Recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned parents about the risks of nursing pillows in October 2020, after 8 infants suffocated to death on Boppy pillows. Nearly a year later, The Boppy Company recalled 3.3 million Boppy Newborn Loungers on September 23, 2021.

Boppy Infant Accessory Recall

In July 2019, The Boppy Company recalled Boppy® Infant Head and Neck Support Accessories due to a suffocation hazard. The problem is that the head pillow support area can be overstuffed, which can tilt the child’s head too far forward. The “chin-to-chest” position can block the airway and cause suffocation.

The recall includes about 14,000 Boppy Head and Neck supports that were sold in Ebony Floral and Heathered Gray colors (Model #4150114 and #4150117). They were sold at Target, Buy Buy Baby, Amazon, and other stores nationwide from March 2019 to May 2019.

Can I Join a Class Action Lawsuit?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but we are not currently filing a class action lawsuit against The Boppy Company. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits on behalf of babies who were seriously injured, suffocated or died in this product.

About Class Actions

Class actions make sense when a lot of people have a relatively similar legal claim. Everyone can join together and collectively seek justice and financial compensation for their financial losses.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Class actions can have disadvantages when one person (or family) has suffered far more serious injuries than the average person in the lawsuit. Instead of a class action, it makes sense to file an individual lawsuit and try to maximize compensation for pain and suffering, wrongful death, lost income, permanent disabilities, and much more.
