May 31, 2023 — An investigation by NBC News found reports of 26 baby deaths in the Boppy Newborn Lounger and other infant lounging pillows between 2015 and 2021.
Most of the deaths occurred after the baby fell asleep and suffocated against the soft fabric, according to NBC News. The number of deaths is also significantly higher than what was previously estimated by federal officials.
In September 2021, around 3.3 million Boppy Newborn Lounger pillows were recalled after reports of 8 baby deaths due to suffocation between December 2015 and June 2020.
These incredibly tragic infant deaths continue to occur because many Boppy Newborn Loungers and similar products are still being used by caregivers. Many are also illegally resold in online marketplaces.
For example, officials in Ohio recently reported that the Boppy Newborn Lounger has already killed two babies this year in Montgomery County.
According to a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Department of Job and Family Services:
“Babies can suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs their breathing.”
In many cases, caregivers put the baby on the pillow awake, but the baby fell asleep and suffocated. Babies can also die if they roll over and get their face trapped against the fabric.
Another problem is that baby lounging pillows prop the infant up at an angle, similar to an inclined sleeper. Young infants do not have the neck strength to hold their own head up, so they suffocate when their chin touches their chest and compresses their airway.
