UPDATE: Boppy Linked to 10 Infant Deaths Since 2015

In June 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that 10 infants died while using a Boppy Newborn Lounger, including two babies who died shortly after the Boppy pillow was recalled in 2021.

Parents are also being warned not to buy Boppy pillows online, where they are still being illegally re-sold on Facebook Marketplace and other online retailers.

Eight deaths were reported when the Boppy Newborn Lounger was recalled in 2021. Safety officials provided details of 2 more tragic deaths that occurred shortly after the recall:

  • October 2021: A baby died after being put on a Boppy for sleep and then rolled underneath a nearby adult pillow. The cause of death was “positional asphyxia.”
  • November 2021: A baby was put on a Boppy in an adult bed next to a parent, along with soft bedding. The baby was later found dead on the Boppy. The baby’s cause of death was undetermined.

26 Baby Deaths Linked to Boppy and Similar Newborn Loungers

In May 2023, an investigation by NBC News found 26 reports of babies who suffocated to death in the Boppy Newborn Lounger and similar infant lounging pillows between 2015 and 2021. These deaths continue to occur on a routine basis. Just weeks ago, officials in Ohio reported 2 more deaths in Montgomery County alone that were linked to the Boppy Newborn Lounger.

What is the Problem?

Lounging pillows and pads, such as Boppy, are meant to help babies sit or rest while awake. If babies are left unattended or asleep, they can roll over into the soft fabric and suffocate to death. Another risk is that the baby’s head can fall in a way that blocks their airway.

3.3 Million Boppy Newborn Loungers Recalled

On September 23, 2021, The Boppy Co. recalled nearly 3.3 million newborn loungers after the deaths of at least 8 babies. The recalled products include:

  • Boppy Original Newborn Lounger
  • Boppy Preferred Newborn Lounger
  • Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Lounger

Where Were They Sold?

Boppy newborn loungers were sold in stores from January 2004 to September 2021 by retailers like Amazon, Pottery Barn Kids, Target, Walmart, and more.

What Happened?

Infants have suffocated after being placed in a Boppy pillow on their back, side or stomach. There were 8 deaths reported between December 2015 and June 2020, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

CPSC Acting Chairman Robert S. Adler said:

“These types of incidents are heartbreaking. Loungers and pillow-like products are not safe for infant sleep, due to the risk of suffocation. Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time – even in products not intended for sleep – and since suffocation can happen so quickly, these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market.”

Baby Loungers and Nursing Pillows Linked to 28 Infant Deaths — Consumer Reports

Earlier in September 2021, an investigation by Consumer Reports found at least 28 reports of babies who suffocated to death on nursing pillows and baby loungers, including 7 deaths involving products made by Boppy.

Boppy Recalls 14,000 Infant Head and Neck Supports

On July 23, 2019, The Boppy Co. recalled about 14,000 Boppy Infant Head and Neck Support Accessories due to a risk of suffocation and death.

There were 3 reports of babies’ heads being pushed forward (touching chin to chest). No injuries were reported. The problem is that the head-support area can be overstuffed, which can cause the infant’s head to be tilted too far forward. This poses a suffocation hazard.

The recall involves Boppy Head and Neck Support sold in two styles: Ebony Floral and Heathered Gray (Model #4150114 and #4150117).

What Should I Do?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) warns parents to never let babies sleep on infant loungers or pillows. Instead, babies should sleep alone, on a firm, flat surface that does not have soft blankets or pillows, in their own space (such as a crib, bassinet or play-yard that meets federal safety requirements).
