February 16, 2022 — Brut and Sure antiperspirant sprays have been recalled because they contain the toxic chemical benzene.
The products are used for antiperspirant (anti-sweat) and deodorant purposes. They were packaged in aerosol spray cans and sold in the U.S. and Canada.
The recall includes all lots with expiration dates on or before August 2023. The following products are affected by the recall:
- Brut Classic Antiperspirant Aerosol (4 oz)
- (UPC 00827755070085)
- Brut Classic Antiperspirant Aerosol (6 oz)
- (UPC 000827755070108)
- Brut Classic Deodorant Aerosol (10.0 oz)
- (UPC 00827755070047)
- Sure Regular Antiperspirant Aerosol (6.0 oz)
- (UPC 00883484002025)
- Sure Unscented Antiperspirant Aerosol (6.0 oz)
- (UPC 00883484002278)
The products were sold by TCP HOT Acquisition LLC (doing business as HRB Brands).
The company said no adverse events have been reported related to the recall, but warned that “exposure to benzene… can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening.”
Last year, benzene was found in dozens of deodorant spray products by the independent lab Valisure. In November 2021, recalls were issued for several types of Old Spice and Secret deodorant sprays due to benzene contamination.
