Butterball Turkey Recall

In March 2019, Butterball recalled approximately 78,000 pounds of raw ground turkey products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Schwarzengrund, according to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service.

What Butterball Turkey Products Were Recalled?

The recalled products are labeled with the establishment number “EST. P-7345” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The recalled packages of Butterball raw ground turkey was produced on July 7, 2018. Because the recalled products have a use-by date of July 26, 2018, it is unlikely that any of the turkey is still in stores, but it is possible that consumers may still have it in their freezers at home.

6 People Sick in Butterball Turkey Salmonella Outbreak

At least 6 people in 3 states were infected with Salmonella after eating Butterball turkey, according to an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The illnesses were reported in Minnesota (1), Wisconsin (4) and North Carolina (1). One person was hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. The illnesses started on dates ranging from December 19, 2018 through February 2, 2019.

What is the Problem?

Tests on unopened packages and leftover Butterball ground turkey from the homes of 4 sick people were positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella Schwarzengrund, according to the CDC.

Salmonella Food Poisoning

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning illnesses. Most persons who are infected with Salmonella develop symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts about a week. In some people, the diarrhea is so severe that the patient must be hospitalized.
