Cahill’s Cheese Recalled for Listeria Risk
In July 2021, Cahill’s Farm Cheese, of Ireland, recalled batches of specialty cheddar cheese due to possible Listeria contamination.
The first recall was announced on July 27, when Whole Foods recalled Cahill’s Cheddar Porter and Whiskey Cheddar Cheeses from 44 stores across 22 states. No illnesses were reported.
The second recall was announced on July 29, when more Cahill’s and Lidl cheddar cheeses were recalled due to a risk of Listeria. The recalled products were sold in bulk for cutting and repackaging, as well as food service.
What Cheeses Were Recalled?
The recalled cheddar cheese products include:
- Cahill’s Deli Wheel (5-pound wheels or 1.1-kg half moon)
- Cahill’s Original Irish Porter Cheese
- Cahill’s Irish Whiskey Cheese
- Cahill’s Wine Cheese
- Lidl Preferred Selection Irish Stout Cheddar
- Lidl Preferred Selection Red Wine Cheddar
Cahill’s Finds Contaminated Equipment in Facility
Cahill’s investigated the issue and and discovered a piece of equipment as the potential source of Listeria. “The equipment was immediately removed from our production line. All our products manufactured since have tested fully clear,” according to the recall.
What is the Risk?
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal food poisoning infections. The short-term symptoms may include a high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
