Canada Investigates Brake Failures on 2011-2012 Ford F-150s

Canada Investigates Brake Failures on 2011-2012 Ford F-150s

November 15, 2016 — Transport Canada is investigating brake failures on certain Ford F-150 pickup trucks from the 2011 and 2012 model-years after receiving more than 100 consumer complaints.

Transport Canada said it discovered an issue with the brake vacuum-assist system in which the electric vacuum pump suddenly failed, resulting in “an unexpected, longer stopping distance.”

The agency made a “preliminary determination that there is a safety defect” and was “disappointed that Ford disagrees with our assessment,” according to Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport.

Transport Canada is only investigating the problem on F-150s with 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engines. In some cases, drivers said the brake pedal went all the way to the floor with complete loss of braking power. No accidents or injuries have been reported, but several near-misses have occurred.

In May, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration closed their investigation of the 2011-2012 Ford F-150s after concluding that the trucks “remained controllable” when the brakes suddenly failed.

The NHTSA investigation closed shortly after Ford offered to extend warranties on the electric vacuum pump for all 2011 and 2012 F-150s sold in the U.S. and Canada for 10 years or up to 240,000 kilometers.

The NHTSA is currently investigating dozens of complaints about total brake failures on the 2013-2016 model-year Ford F-150s with 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engines. Several drivers had to swerve off the road to avoid hitting other cars, rolled into intersections, and one person nearly missed a child in a school crosswalk.
