Cashmere Bouquet Talcum Powder and Asbestos

Cashmere Bouquet is a classic floral-fragrance body powder made by Colgate-Palmolive. It contains talc, a dusting powder that studies show contained up to 20% asbestos fibers until the mid-1970s.

Is There Asbestos in Talcum Powder?Asbestos Under a Microscope

Asbestos was banned in cosmetic talcum powder products in 1973. In 1976, Dr. Arthur Rohl tested Cashmere Bouquet and found that it contained 8-20% asbestos fibers. “Asbestos fibers can cause mesothelioma, a chest and abdominal cancer, and can also result in the scarring of lung tissue and gastro‐intestinal difficulties,” Dr. Rohl told the New York Times.

What is the problem?

Asbestos in talc is a major health concern for Baby Boomers. Your mother probably sprinkled you with it in baby powder. You breathed it in barber shops or used it for daily hygiene. Talc dust was on everything from surgical gloves to condoms and tampons. Talcum powder has also been linked to higher rates of ovarian cancer in women who used it genitally.

Why Did Talc Have Asbestos?

Talc is a super-soft silicate mineral that comes from mines in the ground. It is closely related to another silicate mineral — asbestos — and they are often found together in the same mineral deposits.

$13M Awarded in Cashmere Bouquet Mesothelioma Lawsuit

In April 2015, a jury in California awarded $13 million to a woman named Judith Winkel who developed mesothelioma after using Cashmere Bouquet before the 1970s when it contained asbestos. She used it nearly every day from 1961 until 1976, and she said each time it created “a little cloud, like a dust cloud” that she breathed in the air.

$18M Awarded in Talcum Powder Mesothelioma Lawsuit

In October 2016, another jury in California awarded $18 million to a man named Philip Depoian who developed mesothelioma from talc. He was exposed to asbestos in talcum powder products like Old Spice, Clubman, Kings Men, and Mennen Shave Talc in barbershops.

Asbestos and MesotheliomaAsbestos in Lungs

Mesothelioma is an aggressive and often deadly type of lung cancer that is known to be caused by breathing asbestos. Under a microscope, asbestos fibers look like bundles of tiny needles. When asbestos gets in the lungs, it stays there and causes low-level inflammation. It takes 20-50 years to get mesothelioma from asbestos.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

  • Persistent cough
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Painful breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fluid buildup
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Weight loss

In 2014, experts looked at lung tissue of a woman who died of mesothelioma after using Cashmere Bouquet when it contained asbestos. The asbestos “accumulated in her lungs and likely caused or contributed to her mesothelioma,” they concluded. Her lungs contained identifiable fibers of asbestos, which were traced to the mines where the talc originated and matched with the final product. They also showed how talc was puffed in the air and inhaled.

The study was led by Dr. Gordon, a research professor the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, and published in October 2014 — “Asbestos in commercial cosmetic talcum powder as a cause of mesothelioma in women”.
