August 26, 2024 — A jury in South Carolina has awarded $63 million to a terminally ill man who developed mesothelioma after being exposed to baby powder.
The lawsuit was filed by Michael P., a man from Charleston who blames Johnson & Johnson for selling talcum powder products that were contaminated with asbestos.
Asbestos is linked to mesothelioma, a highly-aggressive and often fatal type of lung cancer. He claims that he developed mesothelioma as a result of breathing asbestos in the air while using baby powder.
He claims that he used baby powder for nearly 50 years as a substitute for deodorant, according to the lawsuit. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in July 2023.
The verdict includes $32.6 million in compensatory damages, plus $30.7 million in punitive damages against Johnson & Johnson.
Johnson & Johnson is facing more than 57,000 lawsuits involving people who were diagnosed with cancer after using talcum powder, including people with mesothelioma and women with ovarian cancer.
