June 14, 2024 — A jury in Portland, Oregon has awarded $260 million to a 49-year-old woman who developed mesothelioma after 30 years of using Johnson’s Baby Powder.
The lawsuit was filed by Kyung L., a mother from Oregon who was diagnosed with mesothelioma in August 2023.
Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive, and often fatal type of lung cancer that is strongly associated with exposure to asbestos.
In her lawsuit, she accused Johnson & Johnson of failing to warn her that talcum powder in Johnson’s Baby Powder may be contaminated with asbestos.
Her lawyers showed the jury evidence that Johnson & Johnson tested the talcum powder and found asbestos, but failed to take Johnson’s Baby Powder off the market until recently.
Johnson & Johnson stopped selling all talc-based baby powder products in the U.S. and Canada in 2020, soon after recalling some products in 2019. The company later announced that it would stop selling all of its talc-based baby powder products worldwide in 2023.
