May 22, 2020 — Chanel has been hit with a lawsuit from a woman who claims she developed mesothelioma after nearly 30 years of using asbestos-contaminated talcum powder products.
The lawsuit was filed by Dolores G., a woman from Miami, Florida, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma in September 2019 at the age of 65 years old.
She claims she developed mesothelioma after breathing asbestos in Chanel after-bath talcum powder products from 1965 to 1991, as part of her regular hygiene routine.
She purchased the Chanel after-bath talc products from Publix and Woolworth stores, which are also named as defendants in the lawsuit.
Chanel is accused of failing to provide warnings regarding the increased risk of mesothelioma from talcum powder, despite evidence of asbestos contamination in talcum powder dating back to the 1930s.
In recent years, around 20,000 lawsuits have been filed by people who developed cancer after using talcum powder products.
Most of the lawsuits involve women with ovarian cancer who used Johnson’s Baby Powder, but Johnson & Johnson has also been hit with several multi-million dollar verdicts for women with mesothelioma — including a $325 million verdict in a baby powder mesothelioma lawsuit in June 2019.
The jury concluded that her mesothelioma was likely caused by years of breathing asbestos in the air when she dispensed a bottle of talc.
