May 23, 2024 — A lawsuit has been filed against Panera Bread by an 18-year-old man who went into cardiac arrest after drinking Charged Lemonade.
The lawsuit was filed by Luka A., a high school student from Pennsylvania. He had no history of heart problems and consumed limited caffeine, according to his lawsuit.
On March 9, 2024, he went to a Panera Bread restaurant and picked up a large Mango Yuzu Citrus Charged Lemonade that he had purchased through the app.
The lawsuit claims “he was not aware that the Charged Lemonade was a super high energy drink with high amounts of caffeine, sugar and guarana.”
Later that night, while at a movie theater with friends, he went into sudden cardiac arrest. The cardiac arrest was later found to be caused by ventricular fibrillation, a type of heart arrhythmia that can be triggered by caffeine, according to the complaint.
After being rushed to the hospital, doctors implanted a permanent cardioverter defibrillator. He claims that he continues to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and is on medication.
His lawsuit claims that the caffeine content of the large-sized Panera Charged Lemonade has up to 390 milligrams of caffeine, which is more than the combined amount of caffeine in a 12-oz. Red Bull (114-mg caffeine) and a 16-oz. Monster Energy (160-mg caffeine).
The amount of sugar in a Panera Charged Lemonade also ranges from 82 grams to 124 grams, depending on the size and ice level.
The lawsuit was filed on May 20, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania — Case Number 2:24-cv-02137-TJS.
