Benzene and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Exposure to benzene at work is associated with a 40% increased risk of leukemia, according to an analysis of 15 studies that was published in the journal Environmental Health in 2010. The risk was even more increased for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) and Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) among workers who were exposed to higher levels of benzene over a longer period of time.

Does Benzene Exposure Cause Leukemia?

Yes. The American Cancer Society warns that benzene exposure is known to cause cancer in humans when it is inhaled or swallowed. The risk is especially serious for mechanics, railroad workers, chemical workers, shoemakers, and oil refinery workers.

What is Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia?

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer that starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes in the bone marrow. CLL causes abnormal lymphocytes to grow uncontrollably and crowd out healthy cells. These abnormal cells also do not fight infections very well.

What is the Risk of CLL?

CLL accounts for about 25% of all new cases of leukemia in the United States. Approximately 20,000 people will be diagnosed with CLL in 2017, and it will cause about 4,660 deaths. The average lifetime risk of being diagnosed with CLL is 1 in 200 (0.05%) people. It is rarely seen in people under 40 years old.

Symptoms of CLL

CLL does not usually cause any symptoms until it is very advanced. People with CLL can live for many years without treatment. IF symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Painless swelling of the lymph nodes
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, stomach, or groin
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling of “fullness” below the ribs
  • Fever
  • Infections
  • Weight loss

Diagnosis & Treatment for CLL

CLL is diagnosed with blood tests that show abnormal blood cell counts. Patients may need a bone marrow biopsy, in which a doctor removes a tiny amount of bone marrow and looks for cancer cells. Treatments for CLL may involve radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery to remove the spleen, and targeted therapy to kill cancer cells.
