Benzene and Cancer
Benzene is a colorless, sweet-smelling, flammable, and highly-toxic chemical that is known to cause cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma. The problem is that benzene evaporates quickly and it is easily breathed in the air. Millions of people are exposed to benzene on a daily basis at work, especially railroad workers and auto mechanics.
Types of Cancers Linked to Benzene
Breathing benzene is extremely harmful to health. Once the chemical gets into the body, it is metabolized by the liver and it accumulates in the bone marrow. This could potentially cause the bones to produce abnormal blood cells, resulting in blood cancers like leukemia.
Several types of cancer have been linked to benzene, including:
- Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
- Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS)
- Multiple Myeloma
- Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)
- Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
- Aplastic Anemia
