August 16, 2024 — North Fish USA has recalled certain packages of “Cold Smoked Capelin” that may be contaminated with botulism bacteria.
The recall involves imported 9-oz. packages of “Cold Smoked Capelin” that were distributed to retail stores on the East Coast.
The packages have UPC code 4811527003360 and a Best-Before Date of 07.13.2024 or 01.05.2025 stamped on the back. The fish was imported to the U.S. from Belarus.
According to the recall, “uneviscerated fish over 5” in length may contain Clostridium botulinum spores as they are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish.”
Consumers are being warned not to eat the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
Eating food that is contaminated with the bacteria Clostridium botulinum can cause botulism, a life-threatening type of food poisoning that can cause paralysis or death.
The symptoms may include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble speaking or swallowing, trouble breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal distention and constipation.
No illnesses were reported, but the potential contamination was noted by Patriot Foods after a routine inspection by health officials in New York and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory staff.
