Geisha Medium Shrimp Recalled for Food Poisoning Risk

In February 2023, Kawasho Foods USA Inc. issued a limited recall for certain 4-oz. cans of Geisha® Medium Shrimp that may be under-processed.

Company Recalls All 4-oz. Cans of Geisha Medium Shrimp

In April 2023, Kawasho Foods expanded the recall to include ALL 4-oz. cans of Geisha® Medium Shrimp. The company “made this decision after receiving additional information from the FDA.”

Where Was It Sold?

The product was distributed to retailers nationwide from December 2022 through April 2023, including stores like Walmart, Associated Food Stores, Stater Bros Markets, Safeway, and Albertsons.

Did Anyone Get Sick?

No illnesses were reported, but he product could cause food poisoning. In the original recall, Kawasho Foods said there were complaints of the cans swelling, leaking, or bursting open. The company warned:

“There is a possibility that the product has been under processed, which could lead to the potential for spoilage organisms or pathogens.”

What is the Risk?

Eating canned foods that are under-processed could cause severe food poisoning. There is a risk of botulism because the bacteria Clostridium botulinum can grow inside the can if it is not heated to a temperature that is sufficient to kill the bacteria.

Under-Processed Food Can Cause Botulism

The food may not look, smell, or taste spoiled, but if it contains the botulism toxin, taking even a tiny sip could be deadly, according to the CDC. This bacteria produces a powerful nerve toxin that can cause paralysis and death within 18 to 36 hours.

Symptoms of Botulism

  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Double vision.
  • Drooping eyelids.
  • Blurry vision.
  • Slurred speech.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Difficulty moving the eyes.
