Colsen Fire Pit Recalled After 19 Burn Injuries Reported
In October 2024, Colsen voluntarily recalled about 89,500 tabletop fire pits due to serious fire and burn hazards. In a statement on its own website, Colsen said it was launching the recall because “we take safety very seriously.” The fire pits are designed to burn liquid alcohol in an open concrete reservoir, which poses a risk of flame-jetting and uncontrolled pool fires. The fire pits were sold online and at major retailers nationwide from January 2020 to July 2024.
Fire Pit Lawsuit Filed Against Amazon
Nearly 2 years after the recall, in August 2026, a new product liability lawsuit was filed against Amazon and the fire pit’s manufacturer. The plaintiff is seeking justice for his injuries. He was severely burned by one of the recalled fire pits well after the CPSC’s warning had already gone out.
What Is the Problem With Colsen Fire Pits?
The CPSC says the danger comes from how these fire pits are refueled. Alcohol flames can burn almost invisibly, so a fire pit can look like it has gone out when it has not. Refilling it while a flame is still present is when flame jetting can occur. According to the CPSC:
“Flame jetting is a serious event that can occur while pouring alcohol, when fire flashes back to the alcohol container and suddenly propels burning alcohol out of the container and onto people nearby.”
Alcohol can also splash or leak from the open reservoir during ordinary use, creating a flash-fire that spreads beyond the unit. According to the CPSC, flame jetting is an explosive type of flash-fire that happens in under 1 second, which is too fast for most people to react.
Can You Sue Amazon Over a Recalled Colsen Fire Pit?
In August 2026, a lawsuit was filed in San Diego County Superior Court against Amazon.com, Inc., Colsen, and a related company, Gusar, LLC, on behalf of a San Diego resident and former U.S. Navy search-and-rescue swimmer.
According to the lawsuit, the victim bought a Colsen tabletop alcohol fire pit on Amazon in February 2021. On September 2025, he was severely burned in a flame-jetting incident that occurred on his balcony. This incident occurred about 1 year after the fire pit was recalled.
The lawsuit agrees that Amazon sent out a recall notice about the tabletop fire pit, but the notice only warned the plaintiff that it “may not meet current safety standards,” without disclosing the risk of severe burns.
The lawsuit also argues that Amazon cannot rely on a defense that it has no liability for third-party products because it is merely a neutral distributor. This claim rests on a California legal precedent that has allowed injured consumers to hold online marketplaces accountable when they control what is listed, process the transaction, and profit from the sale.
Amazon issued a statement disagreeing with some of the lawsuit’s claims, saying the recalled fire pits were removed from the site after the October 2024 recall, and they are not available for sale.

How Many People Have Been Burned by Colsen Fire Pits?
The CPSC said it has received 31 reports of flame jetting or flames escaping from Colsen-branded fire pits, including 19 burn injuries. These incidents include:
- 2 incidents involved third-degree burns to more than 40% of the victim’s body
- 6 incidents required surgery, prolonged medical treatment, or hospital admission to a burn unit, or left the victim with permanent disfigurement
- A related product, FLIKRFIRE, is tied to 2 deaths as part of a broader CPSC warning about alcohol-burning tabletop fire pits, which have been linked to more than 60 injuries since 2019 across several brands

What Should I Do If I Have a Colsen Fire Pit?
The CPSC advises consumers to stop using a recalled Colsen fire pit immediately and dispose of it. Colsen has said it does not have the resources to offer refunds, so a return to the manufacturer likely will not provide compensation for the product itself, let alone any injury.
