UPDATE: Dairy Manufacturers Recalls Crecelac Infant Formula
In June 2024, Dairy Manufacturers Inc. expanded a recall for Crecelac Infant Formula after a can tested positive for Cronobacter bacteria.
According to the recall: “Crecelac Infant 0-12 with an expiration date of 08/2025 was manufactured at D.M. Mexicana Sa De Cv in Monterey, Mexico and is part of this ongoing recall. D-M is now alerting consumers that a sample of this product has tested positive for Cronobacter spp.”
Crecelac 12.4 oz containers were distributed primarily in March, April, and May 2024. The product was distributed through retail stores in the state of Texas only. The recalled product is labeled as infant formula and packaged in a 12.4 oz. cardboard and aluminum can.
FDA Safety Warning for Crecelac Infant Formula
In May 2024, the FDA warned parents and caregivers about Cronobacter safety concerns with Crecelac Goat Milk Infant Formula that was distributed in Texas and possibly other states by Dairy Manufacturers Inc., a company based in Prosper, Texas.
How To Identify Recalled Infant Formula
The recall involves the following types of infant formula:
- CRECELAC INFANT Powdered Goat-Milk Infant Formula with Iron 0 to 12 months – Net Wt. 12.4 oz (352g)
- Farmalac BABY Powdered Infant Formula with Iron 0 to 12 months Net Wt. 12.4 oz (352g)
- Farmalac BABY Powdered Infant Formula with Iron Low Lactose 0 to 12 months Net Wt. 12.4 oz (352g)
What is the Problem?
No illnesses were reported at the time of the recall, but infants that consume these products could be at risk of potentially severe infection due to the Cronobacter contamination.
What is Cronobacter?
Cronobacter is a bacteria that can cause bloodstream infections (sepsis) and central nervous system infections (meningitis). In infants, Cronobacter infections can cause brain abscess, developmental delays, motor impairments, and death.
Symptoms of Cronobacter Infections in Infants
- Poor feeding
- Irritability
- Temperature changes
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Grunting breaths
- Abnormal body movements
Crecelac Baby Formula Illegally Sold in U.S.
The recalled Crecelac and Farmalc Infant Formula products were sold in the U.S. illegally, according to the FDA. The manufacturer did not submit the required pre-market notification. When the FDA investigated, they found Cronobacter in a sample of Crecelac Powdered Goat Milk Infant Formula collected from a store in Texas.
