CVS Eye Ointments Recalled for Lack of Sterility

In February 2024, CVS Health Lubricant Eye Ointment was recalled because it may not be sterile, which poses a risk of severe eye infections that could be life-threatening.

What Happened?

The recall was announced by Brassica Pharma Pvt. Ltd., a pharmaceutical company based in Thane, India, a city located just outside of Mumbai. The eye ointments were recalled “due to a lack of sterility assurance at the facility noted during an inspection conducted by the Food and Drug Administration,” according to the recall notice.

How To Identify Recalled CVS Eye Ointments

The recall involves the following eye ointment from CVS with expiration dates between May 2024 and July 2025:

  • CVS Health Lubricant Eye Ointment (Mineral Oil 31.9%, White Petrolatum 57.7%, Microcrystalline Wax, Stearic Acid Wheat Germ Oil) — 3.5 gram tube, packaged in cardboard box with UPC Code 050428634141

The manufacturer also recalled two types of Equate Eye Ointments from Walmart — Equate® Lubricant Eye Ointment and Equate® Stye Lubricant Eye Ointment. The recall also involves AACE Pharmaceuticals Lubricant PM Ointment.

Infections From Contaminated Eye Ointments

People who use eye ointments that are contaminated with bacteria or other microbes could develop eye infections or related harm. Eye ointments and drops are high-risk because drugs applied directly to the eyes bypass some of the body’s natural defenses.

Were Any Eye Infections Reported?

No eye infections or other adverse events were reported as of February 16, 2024, but the recall follows a deadly outbreak of eye infections in 2023 that was linked to eye drops that were manufactured in India and contaminated with drug-resistant bacteria.

CVS Eye Drops Linked to Infection Risk

In October 2023, the FDA issued a Safety Warning for CVS Eye Drops and other eye drops from Target, Rite Aid, and other stores that were manufactured in India. FDA inspectors found “insanitary conditions” in areas of the facility where the eye drops were made, including harmful bacteria.

What is the Risk?

  • Eye infections
  • Vision loss
  • Blindness
  • Loss of the eye
  • Infection spreads to the body (invasive infection)
  • Sepsis
  • Hospitalization
  • Death
