In October 2023, the FDA issued a Safety Warning for dozens of eye drops that may cause severe infections, vision loss, or blindness.

Have Any Infections Been Reported?

The FDA said that it has not received any reports of eye infections from the CVS eye drops listed above, but the agency is warning consumers not to use the eye drops due to the risk of eye infections.

Where Were They Sold?

CVS said it would pull the eye drops off store shelves, but some products may still be available online. The FDA has requested a recall. Other eye drop products branded as Leader, Rugby, and Velocity may still be available for sale in stores and online, the FDA said.

What Happened?

The FDA inspected the manufacturing facility where they eye drops were made, they found harmful bacteria and “insanitary conditions” in “critical drug production areas,” according to the safety warning. The agency did not name what type of bacteria was found in the facility.

What is the Risk?

Eye infections can cause permanent vision loss, blindness, or even deadly complications if the infection spreads into the bloodstream.

In early 2023, a deadly outbreak of infections was linked to EzriCare Artificial Tears. Those eye drops caused at least 81 infections, including 4 deaths in multiple states. The infections were linked to Pseudomonas bacteria, which is highly resistant to antibiotics and extremely dangerous because infections are so hard to cure.

What Should I Do?

Anyone who has purchased the eye drops listed above should be vigilant for symptoms of an eye infection. Seek medical attention immediately if these symptoms appear:

  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Discharge (yellow, sticky pus)
  • Blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eye redness or swelling of the eye or eyelid
  • And more
