Dark & Lovely Hair Relaxer Class Action Filed in Michigan

Dark & Lovely Hair Relaxer Class Action Filed in Michigan

November 22, 2022 — A class action lawsuit has been filed by several women who claim that Dark & Lovely Hair Relaxers contain chemicals that pose health risks.

The plaintiffs are 4 women who accuse L’Oreal and SoftSheen-Carson of selling “toxic hair-straighteners and/or relaxers.”

They are seeking to represent a class of women who were exposed to toxic chemicals in Dark & Lovely Hair Relaxers. They claim that women who used these products will need ongoing medical monitoring for cancer and other serious health problems.

The lawsuit claims that Dark & Lovely and other hair relaxers contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as DEP (Di-2-ethylhexylphthalate) and phthalates. These are not listed as ingredients, but instead are often disguised as “fragrance” or “perfume” on the label.

Unfortunately, these chemicals may increase a woman’s risk of endometriosis, cancer, and other health issues, according to the lawsuit.

None of the 4 women who filed the class action claim that they developed health problems after using Dark & Lovely.

Instead, they claim that they never would have spent money on buying Dark & Lovely Hair Relaxers if they knew there was a risk that the products may contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

L’Oreal and SoftSheen-Carson manufacture the following hair-straightening products named in the lawsuit:

  • Dark & Lovely Relaxer Triple Nourished Silkening Relaxer No-Lye
  • Dark & Lovely Relaxer Healthy Gloss 5 Shade Shea Moisture No-Lye Relaxer
  • Dark & Lovely Relaxer No-Lye Conditioning Relaxer System
  • Dark & Lovely Relaxer Healthy Gloss 5 Moisturizing No-Lye Relaxer with Shea Butter
  • Dark & Lovely Relaxer Moisture Plus No-Lye Relaxer
  • Optimum Smooth Relaxer (Professional Multi-Mineral Reduced PH Creme Relaxer)

Lawyers are seeking financial compensation for ongoing medical monitoring the women will need for cancer, as well as other damages.

The class action lawsuit was filed against L’Oreal and SoftSheen-Carson on November 17, 2022 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan — Case Number 2:22-cv-12784-LJM-DRG.
