Deli Meat Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak in 12 States

July 22, 2024 — A deadly outbreak of Listeria has been linked to meat sliced at deli counters in 12 states, according to a warning from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

At least 28 people have been infected with Listeria after eating deli meats, including two people who died in Illinois and New Jersey. All of the victims were hospitalized due to severe food poisoning.

The illnesses began in June 2024, but the true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported.

Sick people who were interviewed reported eating a variety of deli meats, most commonly deli-sliced turkey, liverwurst, and ham. Meats were sliced at a variety of supermarkets and grocery store delis.

Information does not suggest that people are getting sick from pre-packaged deli meats, according to the CDC.

Illnesses have been reported from 12 states, including Georgia (2), Illinois (1), Maryland (6), Massachusetts (2), Minnesota (1), Missouri (2), New Jersey (2), New York (7), North Carolina (1), Pennsylvania (1), Virginia (2), and Wisconsin (1).

The CDC warns high-risk people to avoid eating deli meats unless it is cooked to an internal temperature of 165ºF or steaming-hot just before eating. High-risk people include pregnant women, children under 5, frail or elderly adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems.

Deli meats are a common source of Listeria outbreaks. The problem is that Listeria spreads easily on deli equipment, surfaces, hands, and food. Refrigeration does not kill Listeria.

The CDC recommends calling a health care provider if you have symptoms of a Listeria infection and recently ate deli meats.
