DePuy Orthopedics has recalled or withdrawn several metal-on-metal hip implants because they can fail prematurely (including the ASR, which has a 37% five-year failure-rate). Serious injuries associated with DePuy hip implants include toxic metal poisoning, loosening, soft-tissue growths, and revision surgery.

2010 DePuy Hip Worldwide Recall
In August 2010, DePuy issued a worldwide recall of its ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The motion to recall came after hundreds of complaints were filed over defective devices since 2008. To date, numerous lawsuits have been filed and many more are expected.
Who’s to blame?
Many believe DePuy rushed their product to market without sufficient testing. In fact, the company told the FDA that their device was so similar to another approved product already on the market that the Administration approved the device without actually testing it. Considering that the DePuy hip is failing at a much higher rate than the product to which it was supposedly nearly identical to, we believe DePuy misrepresented their product to the FDA and the unsuspecting public.
I have a defective hip implant. What documentation do I need in order to file a claim?
- Dates of surgeries
- Names of treatment providers
- Names of medical facilities
- Any other relevant medical records
