DePuy Synthes Elbow Implant Recall

In December 2016, DePuy Synthes announced a Class II Recall for 50,311 of their “Radial Head Prosthesis System” implants for elbow replacements.

What is the Problem?

The FDA received 40 reports of the DePuy Synthes elbow replacement loosening since 2014. The recall was issued because patients might need revision surgery when the elbow implant loosens.

How Many People Were Injured?

Unfortunately, thousands of people were implanted with potentially defective DePuy elbow implants by the time it was recalled in the U.S. The number of injuries may continue to grow as more implants fail.

Elbow Replacement Surgery

An elbow replacement is surgery to remove and replace the natural elbow joint with an artificial joint prosthetic. When a defective implant loosens or dislocates, another surgery is necessary.

DePuy Elbow Injuries

  • Elbow implant loosening
  • Dislocation
  • Revision surgery
  • Bone loss
  • Limited mobility or flexibility
  • Bone fracture
  • Tissue damage
  • Surgery complications
  • Persistent pain
  • Infections
  • Hospitalization

DePuy Synthes Elbow Replacement Lawsuits

Lawsuits involving DePuy elbow replacements are still in the early stages. No major trials or jury verdicts have occurred yet, and lawyers have not announced any settlement agreements.

However, DePuy’s recall of the Radial Head Prostheis System could indicate that lawsuits will be filed by people who were injured by complications, needed surgery, or suffered a permanent disability.

Patients who file lawsuits may be seeking financial compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages or an inability to work, hospitalization, recovery, or lifelong elbow problems.

DePuy Elbow Implant Class Action Lawsuit & MDL

DePuy Synthes is not currently facing any class action lawsuits for their recalled elbow replacements. In general, class actions are impractical for people who were injured by defective medical devices. Instead, our lawyers typically file individual lawsuits. These lawsuits may be combined into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which is similar to a class action because it centralizes a lot of lawsuits into one court.
