Rizo Bros Cotija Cheese Recalled for Listeria Risk

In January 2024, Rizo Lopez Foods recalled aged Cotija Mexican Grating Cheese after a batch tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning.

How To Identify Recalled Cheese

The recall involves 44 cases of Aged Cotija Mexican Grating Cheese (8oz), UPC 72724200043 batch number 4DW-23318. This product was distributed nationwide.

The product comes in a small 8-oz. “puck”-shape wrapped in clear plastic, labeled as “Cotija, made with Grade A Milk.”

The top shows “Cotija Aged Mexican Grating Cheese” with orange background. Batch number is identified on the outer edge of the clear plastic with “SELL BY 05/12/24 BATCH 4DW-23318” in black lettering.

What Happened?

No illnesses were reported. Instead, the recall was announced after a random sample that was tested by the Hawaii State Department of Health tested positive for Listeria bacteria on January 3, 2024.

Health officials in Hawaii reported that the cheese was sold at retailers in Hawaiʻi such as R. Field Wine Company, select Foodland and Foodland Farms supermarkets, and Cost.U.Less Hilo.

In response, Rizo Lopez Foods announced a recall and stopped production and distribution of the cheese. The company also opened an investigation into what caused the problem, according to the recall.

What Should I Do?

If you ate the recalled cheese, be vigilant for the symptoms of a Listeria infection, which can take up to 70 days to appear. Healthy people may suffer short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

What is the Risk?

Listeria infection can cause miscarriage and stillbirths among pregnant women, as well as deadly invasive infections in others. The risk of life-threatening complications is highest for elderly adults, young children, and people with vulnerable immune systems.
