What is a Weighted Baby Sleep Sack?
Weighted baby sleep sacks, swaddles, and blankets have plastic weights that are sewn inside the product. The weight ranges anywhere from a few ounces to about 1.5 pounds, depending on the product. They are advertised to help babies self-soothe and stay asleep longer by providing a gentle pressure all over a baby’s body.
Why You Should NOT Use Weighted Baby Products
What is the Risk?
Weighted baby sleep sacks, swaddles, and blankets have been linked to a potential risk of:
- SIDS
- Breathing problems
- Low oxygen
- Brain damage
- Too much pressure on ribcage
- Heart problems
- Baby unable to move out of an unsafe sleeping position
- Death
What is Dreamland Baby?
Dreamland Baby’s weighted swaddles and sleep sacks are advertised for infants under 12 months old. The weights range from 0.8 pounds up to 1.5 pounds of weighted beads, plus about 0.8 pounds of fabric.
The company claims that “gentle weight naturally reduces stress and increases relaxation.” This helps babies “fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer,” according to the company’s FAQ.
Lawmakers Concerned About Dreamland Baby Misleading Parents About Safety
In response to these statements, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate the deceptive advertising practices of Dreamland Baby.
He wrote: “I am deeply concerned by your company’s decision to continue selling these products to vulnerable and unsuspecting parents who are ‘sleep-deprived, stressed and desperate for help,’ all while lacking reputable research to back the safety of these items.”
What is the Problem?
Pediatricians, parents, and lawmakers have raised concerns about the safety hazards of weighted baby products. These products could make it harder for a baby to breathe, causing less oxygen to the brain. Weighted baby sleep products could also put dangerous pressure on the baby’s ribcage and heart, increase the risk of SIDS, and death.
According to Dr. Rachel Moon, a SIDS expert with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP):
“When babies are first born, their rib cage is not rigid, and so it doesn’t take a lot of pressure to press on it and create obstruction there. It makes it harder for them to breathe, it makes it harder for their heart to beat properly if there’s pressure on there.”
Safety Officials Investigate Multiple Deaths in Weighted Baby Products
In April 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Commissioner Rich Trumka Jr. letter to parents and caregivers: “Don’t use weighted blankets or weighted swaddles.” He said there were “multiple infant deaths in these products.”
Major Retailers Stop Selling Weighted Baby Products
In April 2024, under pressure from federal safety officials, top retailers like Target, Walmart, Nordstom and Babylist stopped selling weighted infant products due to serious safety concerns. Amazon also sent out notices to consumers that they will no longer be allowing sellers to list these types of products on their platforms.
Experts Agree: Weighted Sleep Products “Are Not Safe”
- National Institutes of Health (NIH) says that weighted products “can pose dangers for babies.”
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that “weighted products such as weighted sleepers, weighted swaddles, weighted sleep sacks, and weighted blankets are not safe for infants.”
- In August 2023, the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) raised alarm on weighted infant sleep products and also discussed the risk of brain damage and SIDS.
