Matrix Fitness Expands Treadmill Recall After Another Fire Reported

In April 2024, Matrix Fitness expanded a recall to include another 9,700 treadmills that can catch on fire if the power cord becomes loose in the socket. No injuries were reported, but there were at least 7 fires.

Matrix Fitness warned: “This condition is serious and could result in injury and/or property damage.”

What is the Problem?

The power cord can become loose from the treadmill’s power socket, posing a fire hazard, according to a recall notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on April 11, 2024.

How Many Fires Were Reported?

Matrix Fitness expanded the treadmill recall because another fire was reported after the original recall in January 2022. At that time, there were 58 reports of the power cord and socket sparking, smoking, or melting, including 7 fires. Two of the fires caused property damage.

How To Identify Recalled Treadmills

The recalled treadmills were sold for commercial gyms and fitness facilities between March 2018 and January 2024. The recall involves:

  • Matrix Fitness T1xe (Model TM522, Serial Number TM5221803xxxxx)
  • Matrix Fitness T3x (Model TM523, Serial Number TM5231906xxxxx)
  • Matrix Fitness T3xm treadmills (Model TM725, Serial Number TM7251902xxxxx)

What Should I Do?

Gyms and commercial fitness facilities should inspect their treadmills to determine if they are part of the recall. Inspect the power cord to see if there is a bracket installed on the unit.

If the bracket has not been installed, gyms should check to make sure that the power cord is completely inserted into the socket before each use of the treadmill.

Matrix Fitness is recalling these treadmills and conducting a field repair which includes the installation of a power cord keeper bracket.
