UPDATE: Melissa’s Fresh Organic Basil Recalled for Salmonella Risk

On April 19, 2024, Infinite Herbs LLC expanded a recall to include Melissa’s Fresh Organic Basil in 2.0 oz and 4.0 oz packages. The recalled basil was sold at Dierberg’s stores in Illinois and Missouri between February 10th and 20th, 2024.

Infinite Herbs also recalled 2.5-oz. packages of Infinite Herbs Fresh Organic Basil that were sold between February 1 and April 6, 2024, with UPC 8 18042 02147 7. The recalled basil was sold at Trader Joe’s stores in 29 states and at two Fruit Center Marketplace stores in Massachusetts.

Trader Joe’s Basil Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

In April 2024, Trader Joe’s announced a recall for Infinite Herbs Organic Basil due to Salmonella contamination.

How Many People Got Sick?

At least 12 people in 7 states were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium after eating Infinite Herbs Organic Basil from Trader Joe’s, according to the Outbreak Investigation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). No deaths were reported, but one person was hospitalized due to a severe illness.

The case count by state is Florida (3), Georgia (1), Minnesota (4), Missouri (1), New Jersey (1), Rhode Island (1), and Wisconsin (1). The earliest illness was reported in February 2024.

How To Identify Recalled Basil

The recall involves Infinite Herbs Organic Basil (UPC# 8 18042 02147 7)—sold in 2.5-ounce packages between February 1, 2024 and April 6, 2024, and only in AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NE, NH, NJ, NY, NC, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VT, VA, Washington DC, and WI stores.

What Should I Do?

Health officials are urging customers to check their refrigerators or freezers for Infinite Herbs Organic Basil and see if it is being recalled.

If you bought Infinite Herbs Organic Basil between February 1, 2024 and April 6, 2024, you can throw it away or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund.

“Contact your healthcare provider if you think you may have symptoms. of a Salmonella infection after eating the 2.5-oz packages of Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil from Trader Joe’s stores.”

Signs & Symptoms of Salmonella

An infection with Salmonella usually causes symptoms within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. The symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Children under 5, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections.
