Elmiron Vision Loss May Be Misdiagnosed as Genetic Eye Disease

Elmiron Vision Loss May Be Misdiagnosed as Genetic Eye Disease

April 14, 2020 — In a recent case report, doctors warned that patients with vision and eye problems from Elmiron may be misdiagnosed with other eye diseases.

The case report was published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology in March 2020.

The report describes a 41 year-old woman on Elmiron who was misdiagnosed as having Stargardt disease (also known as “retinal dystrophy”), a genetic eye disorder that causes progressive vision loss and retinal damage.

She was later correctly diagnosed with macular degeneration due to Elmiron. She stopped taking Elmiron to prevent further vision loss.

The researchers warned about the risk of permanent blindness as a result of misdiagnosis:

“It is essential that ophthalmologists catch drug toxicities as early as possible, to minimize risk of further irreversible vision loss due to continued medication exposure.”

Elmiron® (pentosan polysulfate sodium / PPS) is a medication that is commonly used by women who suffer from painful bladder syndrome.

Elmiron is linked to an eye disease called “pigmentary maculopathy,” which causes progressive damage to the retina. Unfortunately, Elmiron patients with eye problems are frequently misdiagnosed as having genetic or age-related eye problems. As a result, they continue taking Elmiron, and develop irreversible vision loss or blindness.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals is now facing a growing number of lawsuits from people who developed vision loss or blindness after taking Elmiron. The company is accused of failing to warn about the risk.
