What Are Eye Drops?
Eye drops, eyewash, and irrigating solutions consist of sterile, purified water that is used to rinse the eyes. They relieve itching, irritation, discomfort, stinging, or to remove foreign objects or chemicals (chlorine from pools, for example).
Family Care Eye Wash Recall
In September 2016, a nationwide recall was issued for Family Care Eye Wash due to microbial contamination that could cause an eye infection. No illnesses have been reported yet. The issue was discovered when a complaint about the product was sent to the manufacturer.

FDA Recommendation
Anyone who experienced an eye infection after using this product should report it to the FDA. According to the agency:
“Use of a contaminated product could be calamitous for any population since there is a reasonable probability of a potentially sight threatening eye infection.”
Eye Infections and Vision Loss
Eye infections occur when bacteria invade the eyes. Infections can occur in the eyeball or conjunctiva, which are membranes lining the outer eye and inner eyelid. Infections inside the eyeball or on its surface can cause scarring and permanent vision loss or blindness.
Symptoms of an Eye Infection
- Red eyes
- Pain
- Discharge (may be crusty when you wake up)
- Watery eyes
- Dry eyes
- Itching
- Blurry vision
- Sensitivity to light
