Target Eye Drops Linked to Infection Risk

In October 2023, the FDA warned consumers NOT to use 27 different eye drop products from major retailers, including Target, Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid, and other stores, due to a risk of severe eye infections.

What is the Risk?

These eye drops may be contaminated with bacteria or other microbes that may cause “eye infections that could result in partial vision loss or blindness,” according to the FDA.

What Happened?

The warning was issued after FDA inspectors found “insanitary conditions” and dangerous bacteria in “critical drug production areas in the facility” where these eye drops were manufactured.

Were My Eye Drops Recalled?

The FDA has requested a recall from the manufacturer. On October 31, recalls were issued for Leader® eye drops and Rugby® eye drops.

How Many Injuries Were Reported?

The recalled eye drops were linked to 6 reports of injuries, including people who suffered vision blurriness, vision loss, and burning eyes.

What Eye Drops From Target May Cause Infections?

The FDA warning involves the following Up&Up eye drops from Target:

  • Target Up&Up Dry Eye Relief Lubricant Eye Drops 30 ml: Polyethylene Glycol 400 0.4% & Propylene Glycol 0.3% Eye Drops
  • Target Up&Up Extreme Relief Dry Eye 15 ml (single pack): Polyethylene Glycol 400 0.4% & Propylene Glycol 0.3% Eye Drops
  • Target Up&Up Extreme Relief Dry Eye 30 ml (twin pack): Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Eye Drops 0.5% w/v

Eye Drops Linked to Deadly Infection Outbreaks

Eye drops are supposed to be sterile. Non-sterile eye drops are especially dangerous because they are applied directly to the eyes, which bypasses some of the body’s natural defenses against infections. If an infection occurs, it can also spread in the body.

Earlier in 2023, a deadly outbreak of infections was linked to EzriCare Artificial Tears. These eye drops were linked to 4 deaths and at least 81 infections in multiple states.
